iPod 1.1 Updater Out

If it means that any PRM cruft is removed, then this could be a gauntlet throwing in the making.

Of course, if it's something like error correction, then it's not such a big deal.

Yes, when you're on the "current song" screen, if you press the center button you'll be presented with a progress indicator (little diamond thing).

You can spin the iPod's wheel, and it will adjust the current position.

No, the story was for the iPod software update. What the story left out was that the update is about two months old, but that Apple just put the update into "Software Update." I do not have an iPod (yet), but my iBook still wants me to install the update. Freaky...

It's too bad that apple hasn't set up a method for others to use the software updater to keep all software on the machine upto date. It would be extremely nice if you were presented with a list of programs that the machine could look for updates for.

Some Microsoft apps update via Software Update (IE) and others don't (Office). There's no Rhyme or Reason. Maybe it's because IE is part of the Operating System? Wait, er, nah.

I think the only reason why apple hasn't done this yet is the fact that it opens up some security vulnerabilities.

For example, someone with bad intentions could post up an update to apple's software updater that updates every computer with OS 10.1 or higher... the updater would look like something important to some users, who would then install it. Now, you have the first OS X virus.

The risks of providing other people's software on that large of a scale requires a bit more thought than apple would like to put into it. (IMHO)

Sure, it's called Versiontracker Pro [versiontracker.com]. This will keep track of all your updates for you, but you have to pay. The logistics of Apple keeping track of updates for every single program out there for OS X would be a Good Thing to Have (tm), but the logistics of storing every single update for every single app would be overwhelming. We're talking a hugely bigly massive pipe and a few terabytes of storage here, all for a free service. You thing OS X is expensive now? Add in your piece of the updater cost pie.

It's very possible that iPod's will have to use this software to work with 10.2. And Software Update can get the software out to more users than just an announcement.

For example, my Mom has a Powerbook 550. She *never* checks for updates on versiontracker, while I do it every day. However, she does have Software Update set to check automatically. So she would have missed the original announcement, but gotten the update from Software Update.

However, this should have been done with the software was released, not two months later.

On the other hand there is a lot to be said for letting the more savvy users act as yet another test phase before the people that would really suck up phone support time get a crack at the software. Or even just limiting the rollout rate of new software so if there is a serious bug that escaped testing they can halt the rollout without screwing each and every last user...

The chinese characters are cool though. All the options are in the same place, and your song titles remain in english. So once you learn the positions of the menu items in english, assuming that's what you speak, you can run in chinese mode, which just looks super techy. :)

Actually, I'm not that big of a fan of the Asian
character sets anymore. When the iPod first came
out, I ran it in Japanese. Then after the last
upgrade, the Japanese character set went from the
bolded font it was using to just this sort of
run-of-the-mill unbolded, chunky standard which
really stands out against the much more distinct
roman character set.

Yeah, it's just me nitpicking, but I just think it
used to look cooler.
